Dawn

Sometime later, Jasper sat with his booted feet crossed at the ankles and propped up on a rock, his back against a tree as he strummed his lute. Korvyn sat beside him smiling as the bard began singing a song.

“Oh, o’er the mighty Astyrs,

resides a knight so bold.

A fearsome, lonesome warrior,

with tales yet untold...”

He paused and pulled a small journal from his pocket, scrolling upon it with a quill, also from his pocket. “Not bad, not bad,” he said to himself before pausing and tapping the feather to his lips. “But could be better.”

“I thought it was lovely,” said Korvyn.

“Well, you, my dear, are a biased party.” Jasper threw a grin over his shoulder before turning his attention back to his journal.

“Exactly how much ink do you keep with you?” I asked, eyes darting toward the little vial at his side.

“I learned how to make my own. Mother nature is filled with her own ink, if you know where to look.” He gestured to the forest all around us.

“I have another question.”

“I might have another answer.”

“How is it that you fled in such a hurry, yet you managed to grab your lute?” I nodded toward the instrument.

“Well, when I was dragged to the pillory, I’d been performing in the town square. So, when they grabbed me, they took Lyria, as well, and propped it up to display beside me. You can still see their fun little words.” Jasper flipped the lute so I could see the back, where the words “untalented human scum” were etched. It was stricken through in several places as though someone—likely Korvyn or Jasper himself—had tried to scrub it off. But the initial etchings had been deep.

“Why did you keep it with such horrible words scrawled on it?”

“Because it is mine, and I can’t exactly find a lute peddler these days to replace it. Music is everything to me, and besides... If there’s one phrase in the world that will motivate me to write better songs, it’s untalented human scum.”

“And the journal? You just happened to have that on you, as well?”

“Naturally.” He shrugged. “I am never without a journal of some form. You never know when inspiration strikes for a writer.”

“I thought you were a singer?”

Jasper smirked. “I am both a writer and a singer. A musician and a storyteller. Being a bard is complicated.”

“So, what is in there? Song lyrics?” I glanced toward the journal and Jasper yanked it back toward his chest so I could not read the pages.

“Among other things. If you must know, I’m also documenting all the ridiculous shit you lot get into. I’ve known you all for mere hours and you’re already providing me with a boat load of inspiration.”

My mouth twitched. “You find us amusing?”

“Highly. And this coming from someone who’s friends with a runaway fae prince and a dancing raven.” Jasper pointed to his left across the clearing where Goro bobbed his head and tapped his feet in a little jig nearby, mumbling the tune Jasper had just composed.
